How I Named My Travel Blog and What Not To Do When Naming Your Own

Updated on February 7th, 2019 at 07:07 pm

Hello! My name is April and I’d like to introduce to you my blog. I know I’ve had it for a while but when I started it I wasn’t quite sure to what to call it. All I knew is that I wanted to start blogging like, yesterday. So I gave it a name I was never quite happy with just to get started. Here’s how I named my travel blog and why I think you should name yours more carefully than I did.

Edit: Even since writing this I have once again changed my blog name so pay close attention if you’re new to blogging and don’t want to make the same mistakes I did.

Now, I can’t quite remember if I’ve talked about Impo yet in my blog but I will quickly give you the run down in case you don’t already know. So people here in Chile, particularly Starbucks employees, do not understand my name. If I say it in Spanish (Abril) they ask me to say it in English because I guess people don’t name their kids after months (unless your name is Julio (July)).

So one day I thought I would skip the process of saying my name in Spanish and just jump right to English, “April”. Oops. I had to repeat myself but when I got my drink my name had become Impo. I actually laughed out loud right in front of the barista handing me the drink. It was just too funny. Now it could have been worse but it was still pretty bad. I decided that day that if I ever wrote a book it would be called The Adventures of Impo. A lot of my friends here now call my Impo as a joke and it’s grown on me to a point where I have decided to rename my blog. So welcome (bienvenido) to The Adventures of Impo.

Edit: The Adventures of Impo becomes Just Leaving Footprints

How I Named my Travel Blog, Bernal, Mexico

Well it’s been a few years since I wrote this blog post and a few months since I changed my blog name AGAIN. While I was happy with the name, ‘The Adventures of Impo’ for a while I realized that it didn’t make sense unless I explained it to someone. This was okay when I was studying abroad in Chile as I was mainly writing for pleasure and to keep friends and family updated on my travels.

Now, however, this blog has transformed into something I am extremely passionate about and work on almost every single day. Yes, I have a full time job, but I love writing so much and since I’ve started I have actually been paid to write a few articles. I decided to call this blog, ‘Just Leaving Footprints’, because I realized what my blog niche was. Not only is this blog about travel, but it’s also about sustainability. So read along and remember, take only pictures, leave only footprints.

Advice to New Bloggers

Giving the ol’ thumbs up at the El Tatio Geysers in Chile’s Atacama Desert, 2014.

I think the best advice I can give to you if you’re wanting to start blogging and trying to think of a good name is don’t settle. Don’t settle for a blog name you will grow out of. Do not settle for anything cheesy. Definitely don’t settle for anything that doesn’t relate to what you’re going to blog about. Above all don’t settle for a name that is nice now but won’t grow with you, your blog or your brand. Brainstorm for a few days, not a few hours. Maybe even a few weeks. It is possible to change your blog name down the road but from experience I can definitely say I would not recommend it. It’s a hard and tedious process and can confuse your followers quite a bit. So have fun, be creative and above all don’t settle!
